Frequently Asked Questions About Glass

What is glazing on a window?

On older single-pane windows, the glass is usually surrounded by putty called “glazing compound,” which holds the glass in place and seals out the weather. This putty often lasts decades, but over the years it becomes rock-hard, cracks and even falls off the window.

What is single glazed glass?

Single glazed glass is one layer of glass or can be known as single pane of glass. Single glazed glass is also available in improved forms, e.g. toughened glass etc.

What is double glazed glass windows?

Insulating glass (IG), more commonly known as double glazing (or double-pane, and increasingly triple glazing/pane), consists of two or three glass window panes separated by a vacuum or gas filled space to reduce heat transfer across a part of the building envelope.

What is Low E coating on glass?

This is where low emissivity (or low-e glass) coatings come into play. Low-E glass has a microscopically thin, transparent coating—it is much thinner than a human hair—that reflects long-wave infrared energy (or heat). Some low-e’s also reflect significant amounts of short-wave solar infrared energy.
